Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940. It is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant's extract. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain.

The entourage effect is a proposed mechanism by which cannabis compounds act synergistically to modulate the overall psychoactive effects of the plant. This interactive synergy between cannabis compounds has been coined the “entourage effect.” 

This is different from the psychoactive effects of THC.

Full spectrum CBD from hemp contains terpenes and other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN, THCV and even trace amounts of THC. A full spectrum oil from the hemp plant will contain THC, though in most cases the levels are very low. This is because most CBD oil is extracted from low-THC industrial hemp (Less than 0.3% by dry weight). “Whole plant medicine” is a term used to describe medicines utilizing the full spectrum of therapeutic compounds cannabis has to offer.
